Saint John reef
From the harbour of Ras Qulan, navigating south, we find the Abu Kararim Reef that is, together with Sha’ab Claudio, an underwater cathedral where the daylight coming from above creates magic scenes. After about four hours of navigation towards south we arrive at St. John’s Reef where a series of spectacular immersions with different characteristics satisfy the expectations of all divers.
Among them Abili Kebir and Erg Gaafar or Abili Seghir deserve particular attention: they are gorgeous reefs that vertically drop down into the blue. These places are an exceptional environment for all species of corals and fish. Sharks of every kind and small fish live together in these marvellous waters.
Sha’ab Maharus is a round reef that can be surrounded during an immersion. It offers walls richly decorated with lots of corals and the existence of big fish passing by: particularly sharks and tuna.
At the far south of the reef you can find Marsa Selmi, the only night anchor.
Going back towards north you reach Dolphin Reef or Sataya, a huge reef in the form of a horseshoe. Families of dolphins live in it.
Six miles further north Sha’ab Maksur is located, a long shaped reef that on its northern point allows one of the most fascinating immersions of the whole cruise. Two terraces, twenty five and forty meters deep, offer the opportunity to see the beauty of this magic sea with its abundant number of sea fish, including hammer-fish.

On the way back the wreck of Aka Tienstien offers the opportunity of a different kind of immersion. Leaning on the wall of the reef with the bow sticking out of the sea and the stern twelve meters deep, the wreck enriches the beauty of this place.
Important to see
Apart from big fish passing by, walls decorated with soft corals and sea fans are the main feature of all St John’s reefs.
